Second and third best paper awards at the Spanish national telecom conference 'Telecom I+D'

2nd October 2011

UWICORE researchers received the 2nd and 3rd best paper awards at the spanish telecomunications conference Telecom I+D that took place in Santander (28-30 September 2011). The 2nd best paper award was received by Sara Hernández, Hector Moner, Javier Gozalvez, Ernesto Armada, David de la Fuente and Miguel Sepulcre for their paper entitled 'INTELVIA: Plataforma Inalámbrica Multi-Tecnología para la Señalización, Seguridad y Gestión de Infraestructuras Viales'. The paper presents UWICORE activities in the INTELVIA project where UWICORE is working to design and implement a proof of concept experimental testbed of a novel wireless road signalling solution for cooperative ITS systems. The third best paper award was received by Miguel Sepulcre, Jose Antonio Palazón and Javier Gozalvez for their paper entitled 'Evaluación de Comunicaciones Heterogéneas para el Despliegue de Redes de Sensores en Entornos Industriales'. The paper presents UWICORE activities in the FASYS project where UWICORE is investigating wireless sensor networks for mobile applications in industrial environments. The paper presents the results of an extensive field testing campaign for heterogeneous wireless networks in industrial environments.

Miguel Sepulcre receives a national best PhD thesis award

20th June 2011

Uwicore member Miguel Sepulcre has been awarded by the COIT (Spanish official association of Telecommunication Engineers) with the ONO prize to the best PhD thesis in "Innovation in Advanced Services over new Generation Networks". The COIT annualy awards the best PhD thesis and Master thesis in Spain, being this year the 31st edition of the contest. Aspects such as originality, quality of the obtained results, and applicability have been taken into account by the evaluators. The thesis, entitled 'Adaptive Communication Protocols for Cooperative Vehicular Systems', focuses on the design and optimisation of novel adaptive and contextual cooperative communication techniques and protocols aimed at ensuring the reliability required by cooperative applications while efficiently using the communication resources, and was supervised by Uwicore's director, Dr. Javier Gozalvez.

UWICORE's member selected finalist for the young scientist award at the Spanish national conference 'URSI 2010'

15th September 2010

UWICORE member Baldomero Coll was selected among one of the five candidates for the young scientist award at the spanish conference 'XXV Simposium Nacional de la Unión Científica Internacional de Radio (URSI 2010)' celebrated in Bilbao from the 15th to the 17th of September for his research paper entitled 'Plataforma Experimental y Estudio de la Calidad de Servicio en Redes Multi-Hop Celulares con Retransmisores Móviles'. The awarded paper, coauthored by Jónatan Muñoz and UWICORE's director Javier Gozalvez, introduces a novel testbed to investigate Multi-hop Cellular Networks using Mobile Relays (MCN-MR) through field testing and the first field test results that demonstrate the performance improvements that can be achieved with MCN-MR networks over traditional cellular systems.

France Telecom Foundation award at the 2007 Spanish Young Scientist Contest

5th December 2007

Maria del Carmen Lucas, a PhD student at Uwicore, received the France Telecom Foundation award at the 2007 Spanish Young Scientist Contest (Certamen Arquimedes) organized by the Spanish Ministry for Education and Culture. Mari Carmen's work investigated the possibility to apply bankruptcy theory policies to distribute radio resources among users with varying services and QoS requirements in loaded scenarios. She is now working on extending the developed policies to heterogeneous wireless networks. The work was jointly supervised by Uwicore's Director Javier Gozalvez and Joaquin Sánchez Soriano from the Operations Research Center from the University Miguel Hernández.

Second best paper award at the Spanish national telecoms conference 'Telecom I+D'

1st November 2007

Uwicore members Miguel Sepulcre and Javier Gozalvez received the second best paper award at the Spanish national telecoms conference 'Telecom I+D' celebrated in Valencia from the 29th to the 31st of October. The awarded paper presented Uwicore's proposal of using adaptive and opportunistic transmission mechanisms in wireless vehicular communication systems to maximize traffic safety performance while ensuring an efficient use of the radio channel.

France Telecom Foundation award at the 2006 Spanish Young Scientist Contest

23rd January 2007

Uwicore's alumni Miguel López Benítez received the France Telecom Foundation award at the 2006 Spanish Young Scientist Contest (Certamen Arquimedes) for his research activities while at Uwicore on beyond 3G or 4G common radio resource management schemes for heterogeneous wireless networks. Miguel's work was supervised by Uwicore's Director Javier Gozalvez.
